Is there a way to prevent Mental Health problems from developing?
Unfortunately, no - there is no vaccine or special diet or safe place to live that will protect you or your loved ones from potentially developing a mental health issue. One in 4 Canadians will be challenged with a serious mental health problem at some point in their life – look around you and take note. Because if it’s not the people you are sitting with right now, it might be you who will find yourself facing an emotional/mental health difficulty that you have never experienced previously. And that’s okay! It’s not your fault – it doesn’t happen to people because they are weak, or bad, or asking for it. No one is immune to the challenges of trying to find their own personal slice of mental wellness balance in life. Mental Health Disorders do not differentiate – they impact people equally, regardless of race, ethnic background, religious beliefs, gender, socio-economic status, education, geographical location, family size, etc. Mental health problems stem from a combination of one or more biological, psychological, or social factors in our lives. And every single one of us will experience a mental health moment, to some degree, at least once at some point in this year. BUT, there ARE steps that you can take to ensure that your mental health issues are manageable – that your dreams and life goals do not fall apart while you find your footing again. Early recognition of any mental health issue is key – and being able to access the effective supports and/or the treatment that will help is a must!
